What is Mentoring:

In Greek mythology, Mentor was the son of Alcumus and later in life became a friend of Odysseus. When Odysseus left for the Trojan War he placed Mentor in charge of his son, Telemachus, and of his palace.  This is the origin of the modern use of the word mentor: a trusted friend, counselor or teacher; usually a more experienced person.

Sources such as Merriam-Webster define Mentor as a trusted counselor or guide.  However, Reality Check Services believes the term “mentor” to possess more power and opportunity. We believe mentoring is a potential solution and treatment to the unfortunate epidemic of at-risk teens.

Reality Check Services’ mentoring service was founded on the premise that there are currently 17.6 million young people living in situations that inhibit them from reaching their fullest potential. Throughout the last decade, the founder of Reality Check Services has educated himself in child/adolescent behavioral health, working as a Registered Nurse with this population, volunteering in several different venues, and acquiring knowledge that is evidence-based. He determined a need for individualized care with more attention focused on the youth, rather than on the potential gains for the mentor or the program… Reality Check Services was created to meet this need.

Although a productive, lasting relationship between child and parent is a critical resource for the youth, other adults can provide support that is alike to the support a parent provides. By using our influence and resources, we set forth to stimulate hope and encouragement in the lives of America’s youth one person at a time. Reality Check Services prides itself on its individuality and uniqueness from other programs and mentor services. We are caring and knowledgeable adults, without cultural or socio-economic barriers, who possess an ability to relate with youth and develop positive rapport with parents.
